Strategy games finally feel at home on mobile

May 10, 2026 · Marek Novák

For years, strategy on mobile meant squinting at a shrunken PC interface. Indie studios have quietly fixed this, and Tideborne Command is a great example of the new approach: make the game world itself readable so you barely need menus.

The trick is visual state. Instead of opening a panel to check a town's food, you glance at the harbour and read it. Instead of a build tree, you tap the thing you want to build where it goes. It sounds obvious, but it took a while for designers to stop porting and start rethinking.

Pause-and-plan is the other big win. Real-time strategy on a touchscreen is chaos without it, but let players freeze the world to issue orders and suddenly it's thoughtful instead of frantic. Your thumbs get a break and your brain does the work.

If you bounced off mobile strategy years ago, it's worth another look. The genre grew up. Start with something forgiving and let it teach you its language before you chase the hard scenarios.
